Are you ready for Comprehensive Immigration Reform?

Let’s take family sponsorship: as many people know, if you have a parent or sibling who is an American citizen you can be sponsored for a green card. However, depending on the age and marital status of the alien the wait could be anywhere from 1 – 20 years to go through the process. For most Europeans the wait is between 1 – 10 years, the longer times relate to sibling sponsorship or parents sponsoring married alien children.

For green card holders who marry non-American spouses this process can take 3-4 years to complete, which forces couples to either live apart or wait to relocate on a non-immigrant work visa while they wait for their green card status to come through.

 The reason for these long delays is not because it takes that long to process the paperwork, it’s because for the last 20 years US Immigration has set annual numerical quotas limiting the number of aliens that could immigrate this way. When the quota is reached for the year the excess applications are put into a queuing system that backs up for years.

 One of the proposed reforms would be to either significantly increase the annual quotas, abolish them or modify them in some way so as not to split families for so long, especially green card couples.
